No, we aren’t talking about the 1999 remake directed by Robert Zemeckis. The House on Haunted Hill I’m referring to was released in 1959 starring none other than the late, great Vincent Price. Using exterior shots taken from the historic Ennis House of Los Feliz, California, the film mixed elements of supernatural horror and death all captured within the trappings of a classic dinner murder mystery.

The plot focuses on eccentric millionaire Fredrick Loren (Vincent Price) who offers a challenge to anyone who is interested. He promises to pay 10,000 to whoever stays one night in his apparently haunted house. However, what starts out as a stereotypical horror story, filled with all the usual tropes, quickly turns into a murder mystery packed with twists and turns about the identity of Loren and his real motivations for the challenge.

A remake was released almost 40 years after the original but nothing could compare to the Oscar-caliber acting of Price or the classic feeling of horror from the original. If you have never seen the original then I highly recommend you track it down. Do whatever you have to. Go to a store, file through the Direct TV Movies selection or find a friend who has it! Missing out on this classic is like never seeing the original Fly or King Kong – you just don’t do it.

Vintage Hollywood- The glitz! The glamour- and the kissing! LOTS of kissing. In an era where movies were heavily limited in the amount of immoral content they could portray, something as innocent as a kiss took on a lot more meaning. All great love scenes begin with a great kiss, though in classic movies it may be all the viewers get to see. The rest was left up to their imaginations, so let’s explore some of the best kisses in classic movies:

1. It’s A Wonderful Life (James Stewart and Donna Reed)- 1946.The whole story can be found at http://retrorambling.wordpress.com/2011/08/27/clarence-sinclair-bull-portrait-photographer/ Stewart and Reed lock lips after much inward struggle and self-denial, leaving Reed’s character’s boyfriend literally dangling on the phone.

2. Gone With the Wind (Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh)- 1939. Ah, the road to Atlanta. Fiery sky in the background, Gable practically begs Leigh to kiss him goodbye before he leaves to join the Confederate Army. He gets his kiss AND a slap in the face.

3. The Sound of Music (Daniel Truhitte and Charmian Carr)- 1965. After singing the classic “Sixteen Going On Seventeen” and dancing around a gazebo, Truhitte finally gives Carr what must have been the first kiss of her life, as she goes running toward the camera, grinning like a fool, exclaiming “Wheeeeee!”

The best villain in a class movie would have to be in the movie “The Bad Seed’. In the movie, the villain is actually a small eight-year-old girl. In beginning you see the precocious imp behaving as if she is just a prefect little angel. Nevertheless, deep in the mind of this little girl lays a killer that has no remorse.

Her first murder is that of a classmate. The youngster drowns the small boy because he won a medal that she felt was rightfully hers.I found some more information here. Many people are baffled by what they believe to an accident that occurs while all the children are gathered at a school picnic. The adults have no knowledge that the young girl has pushed the child to his death.

The most evil thing in the movie is when the little girl confesses how she killed the small boy. It is simply bone chilling when she states that she hit him with her shoe when he did not hand over the medal. When the news breaks about her being the killer the movie watcher will also discover that she has killed before. The young girl killed an elderly family friend when she did not let her have something that she promised could be hers.

In historical films, it can often be challenging for an actor to capture the essence of a famous person. One of the best performances done was in the film “Gettysburg,” with Jeff Daniels starring as Union officer Joshua Chamberlain.

Chamberlain was a colonel in charge of the 20th Maine Regiment that held the right flank of the Union Army. He led his men against tremendous odds, ordering them to make a bayonet charge against Confederate troops when ammunition ran out. Jeff Daniels was able to capture the enigmatic, determined officer to a tee, making his performance unforgettable.

He captured extremely well the scene when Chamberlain convinces a group of disgruntled Union soldiers to enter the fight under his command. They had refused to fight in a previous conflict and had been ordered to be shot if necessary. Chamberlain was able to bring them around with his own form of motivation and strong words. Daniels presents the deep thinking preacher turned into a Union officer in a human light, with his wise character and quiet personality.

This episode of Chamberlain’s life was well acted, due to Daniel’s talent and acute research. It is one performance that gives a feel for a famous historical figure.

There are a number of love stories that have captured the hearts and minds of American moviegoers, but there are a few that stand out from the rest.

One in the last few years that has reached classic status quickly is “Sleepless in Seattle.” Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan give stellar performances as two romantics, one who has lost his wife and one who is looking for love. They come together in a tale that has both comedy, loss and redemption woven into it.You can find a quick rundown here

For those who want a little action with a love story, “Titanic,” directed by James Cameron, is the one to watch. The film gives incredible historical detail, eye popping effects and star performances by those such as Kate Winslet and Leonardo di Caprio are heart wrenching. It’s unforgettable scenes above and below decks has etched it as one of the great love stories.

The ultimate classic love story for many is “Gone with the Wind,” still popular after so many decades since its release. The backdrop of the Civil War, with the tumultuous relationship between Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable keep viewers coming back. These films stand out as the classic love stories of all time.
