Best Historical Actor In A Classic Movie

In historical films, it can often be challenging for an actor to capture the essence of a famous person. One of the best performances done was in the film “Gettysburg,” with Jeff Daniels starring as Union officer Joshua Chamberlain.

Chamberlain was a colonel in charge of the 20th Maine Regiment that held the right flank of the Union Army. He led his men against tremendous odds, ordering them to make a bayonet charge against Confederate troops when ammunition ran out. Jeff Daniels was able to capture the enigmatic, determined officer to a tee, making his performance unforgettable.

He captured extremely well the scene when Chamberlain convinces a group of disgruntled Union soldiers to enter the fight under his command. They had refused to fight in a previous conflict and had been ordered to be shot if necessary. Chamberlain was able to bring them around with his own form of motivation and strong words. Daniels presents the deep thinking preacher turned into a Union officer in a human light, with his wise character and quiet personality.

This episode of Chamberlain’s life was well acted, due to Daniel’s talent and acute research. It is one performance that gives a feel for a famous historical figure.
